Dook van Mechelen

PI

2020 - present

Dook van Mechelen is an Associate Professor with the Signal Processing Systems (SPS) group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He received his PhD in experimental Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, in 2010. From 2011 until 2020, Dook lead the THz research of the ABB Group. Nowadays, his research focuses on developing novel sensing concepts, connecting basic research in condensed matter physics and photonics with novel concepts of physics-based signal processing to relevant application domains in security, agriculture and industry. His expertise ranges from optical spectroscopy, with an emphasis on the THz range, to industrial sensor development, signal processing and condensed matter physics.

Djero Peeters

PhD student

2022 - present

Before joining the ASQ group in 2022 as a PhD student, I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degree in applied physics at the TU/e. I did my graduation project in the molecular biosensing group, building an interferometric scattering microscope to improve plasmonic biosensing sensitivity. After that, I did a 3 month internship at Università la Sapienza in Rome, where I worked on strain-engineering 2D materials to create single photon emitters. In my current research, I investigate novel sensing principles for specific and accurate hydrogen sensing using the physics and broad-band optical properties of metal hydrides.

Joost Scheers

PhD student

2023 - present

Before starting my PhD, I received my Bachelors and Masters degree in applied physics at the TU/e. For my masters I did a 3 month internship at Teranova B.V. using machine learning to improve metrology of optical gratings. For my masters thesis I worked on using meta surfaces for light mater interactions to modify the reaction kinematics of chemical reactions. My current research focuses on enhanced sensing principles using functionalized materials equipped with meta surfaces.

Milan Koumans

PhD student

2024 - present

In 2021 I started my Bachelor End Project under the supervision from Dook. During this 6 month project, we investigated a sensing application of leaf wetness using THz spectroscopy. This sparked my interest in applying data-driven signal processing on optical data. By visiting my first conference, the IRMMW-THz conference at Delft in 2022, I knew I would like to persue an research oriented career. After completing both my master's internship and thesis with Dook, we published our first paper. As of currently, my research focuses on THz sensing and hybrid signal processing, combining model-driven and data-driven approaches.
